BMI Calculator Canada

BMI is your weight divided by your height squared. It's a screening number useful for comparing populations, limited for describing any individual.

Canada's own clinical practice guideline defines obesity by whether excess body fat impairs health, not by a BMI figure. So we'll give you the number, the band it falls in, and an honest account of what it does and doesn't tell you.

WHO Classification

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool based on Health Canada and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for adult men and women.

What BMI Measures

BMI (body mass index) is a simple ratio of weight to height: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² or (weight (lbs) ÷ height (in)²) × 703. It measures total mass relative to height, but does not distinguish muscle, bone density, or fat distribution.

What Canada's Clinical Guideline Actually Says

CMAJ 2020 Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guideline:

Redefines obesity as a complex chronic disease characterised by excess body fat that impairs health. Weight itself is an outcome influenced by genetics and environment, not a behaviour.

Waist Circumference & Metabolic Risk
