Body Fat Calculator Canada
Estimate your body fat percentage from tape measurements and see how precise that estimate actually is.
We show a range rather than a decimal, because every method of estimating body fat carries an error margin of several percentage points. A calculator reporting "18.4%" is implying a precision that doesn't exist.

What Body Fat Percentage Measures
Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body mass that is fat tissue. The remainder muscle, bone, organs, water is your lean body mass or fat free mass.
It answers a question BMI can't. BMI measures weight relative to height and can't distinguish a muscular person from someone carrying more fat at the same weight. Body fat percentage addresses that directly.
How Accurate Is This, Actually?
Every method of estimating body fat carries a substantial error margin. Below is a comparison of common estimation methods:
| Method | Error Margin |
|---|---|
| DEXA scan (laboratory reference) | ±1 to 2% |
| Skinfold calipers, trained assessor | ±3 to 5% |
| Skinfold calipers, self-administered | ±4 to 5% |
| US Navy tape method | ±3 to 4% |
| BIA smart scale | ±4 to 8% |
| BMI-derived estimate | ±5 to 8% |

When Low Body Fat Becomes a Health Problem (RED S)
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED S):
Essential fat (~3% men, ~12% women) is a physiological limit, not a goal. Dropping below essential fat levels risks RED S (formerly female athlete triad, affecting all genders).
Warning signs include loss of menstrual periods, frequent illness, stress fractures, stalled performance, persistent fatigue, and disrupted sleep.
