What a Payday Loan Actually Costs

A payday loan is a small, short term loan you repay on your next payday, usually within two weeks. Since 1 January 2025, the most a licensed lender can charge is $14 for every $100 borrowed.

You borrowMaximum feeYou repay
$100$14$114
$300$42$342
$500$70$570
$1,000$140$1,140
$1,500$210$1,710

That Fee Is Really an Annual Rate of About 365%

A flat $14 fee doesn't sound like an interest rate. Converting it to one is the single most useful thing this calculator does, because it lets you compare a payday loan against every other way of borrowing.

The math:

A $70 fee on a $500 loan is 14% for two weeks. There are about 26 two week periods in a year. 14% × 26 ≈ 365% a year.

The Debt Cycle, Calculated

Here's what happens when someone repays a $500 loan on payday, then finds they're short again and borrows the same $500 next payday:

2$70$140
3$70$210
4$70$280
5$70$350
