What the Canada Workers Benefit Is
The CWB is a refundable tax credit for Canadians earning modest incomes from work. Introduced in 2007 as the Working Income Tax Benefit and enhanced in 2019.
Refundable is the important word: unlike non refundable credits, the CWB is paid to you in full even if your tax bill is zero.
Who Qualifies and Who Doesn't
You qualify if
- Resident of Canada throughout the year
- Aged 19 or older on 31 December (or living with a spouse or child)
- Earned at least $3,000 in working income from employment/self employment
- Adjusted net income below the phase out ceiling
You don't qualify if
- Full time student for >13 weeks in the year (unless with dependant)
- Confined to prison for 90+ days during the year
- Exempt from Canadian income tax
