Sales Tax Rates Across Canada

Canada has three systems running at once. The federal GST applies everywhere at 5%; what happens on top of it depends on the province.

How to Calculate It

HST Provinces

One rate, one calculation. Price × rate. $1,000 in Ontario × 0.13 = $130 tax ($1,130 total).

GST + PST Provinces

Two taxes, both calculated on pre tax price. $1,000 in BC: GST $50 + PST $70 = $120 tax ($1,120 total).

Quebec (QST)

QST calculated on pre GST amount. $1,000: GST $50 + QST $99.75 = $149.75 tax ($1,149.75 total).

Working Backwards From a Total

If you have a receipt showing a tax included total and need the pre tax amount for an expense claim or bookkeeping, divide rather than subtract.

Pre tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate)

Tax = Total minus Pre tax

Example (Ontario $1,130 total): $1,130 ÷ 1.13 = $1,000 pre tax, tax $130.

Which Rate Do You Charge? (Place of Supply Rule)

You charge the rate of your customer's province, not your own.

A consultant in Toronto billing a client in Halifax charges 14% HST, not 13%. A freelancer in Calgary billing an Ontario client charges 13% HST despite Alberta having no provincial sales tax at all.
